Dylan Nelson (Galileo): The 5-11, 180-pound senior quarterback led the Lions to the greatest turnaround in San Francisco public school history, which was only appropriate.
He had been known much more around the city as a baseball player, having been selected as the AAA Baseball Player of the Year in May. Considering the Lions had lost 18 straight and 28 of 29 football games heading into Nelson's senior season, no one would have blamed him for skipping the gridiron.
Instead, he orchestrated a 9-3 season that included an unprecedented 16th Turkey Day game victory that earned his team a San Francisco Section championship.
In the championship game - a shockingly lopsided 35-0 win over four-time defending champion Lincoln - Nelson did it all, rushing 16 times for 126 yards, passing for two first-half touchdowns and kicking five extra points. That put him over 2,500 total yards for the season and 30 touchdowns.
The baseball kid was selected the AAA's Football Player of the Year as well, a rare double for a rare kid.
"He's just a real bright young man and an excellent athlete who was the perfect leader for this team," Galileo coach Mark Huynh said. "He had an understanding of exactly what we needed to do, and he made sure we did it."
